BA [Hons.] SOCIOLOGY
The Department of Sociology at M.A.O. College was established in 2019 with the launch of the undergraduate program B.A. (Hons.) Sociology. Since its inception, the department has aimed to provide students with a strong foundation in sociological theory, empirical research, and critical analysis of social structures and processes.
Sociology is the scientific study of society, social relationships, and patterns of behavior in everyday life. It investigates how individuals interact with one another and how societies are organized, maintained, and transformed. The subject spans a wide range of themes, from micro-level interactions to macro-level social systems and structures.
The B.A. Sociology program is designed to:
• Introduce students to the systematic understanding of social interaction, organization, institutions, and change.
• Examine the dynamic relationship between individuals and society.
• Explore key issues such as social inequality, identity, power, culture, and globalization.
• Encourage students to think critically about social norms, practices, and transformations across time and space.
By combining empirical investigation and theoretical perspectives, sociology equips students with the analytical tools to understand the complexities of contemporary society. The discipline is also highly relevant to public policy, welfare, education, development, and other areas of social impact.
The Department of Sociology encourages students to engage with the world around them, nurturing informed citizens who are capable of contributing meaningfully to society through academic and professional pathways.
